In June, the Saint Anthony Cycling Route was officially inaugurated, a new cycling itinerary of over 250 km connecting Gemona del Friuli to the Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padova. A scenic route that passes through rural landscapes, historic villages, and cities of art, following the footsteps of Saint Anthony between Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto.

The inauguration marks the completion of a project that began in the fall of 2021, when – thanks to the collaboration with the Municipality of Gemona del Friuli, the lead partner in the initiative, and other local entities and administrations – the pedestrian route of the Saint Anthony Pilgrimage was introduced. This route, marked in both directions and walkable in 11 stages, aims to connect the Sanctuary of Saint Anthony of Gemona, which houses the oldest church dedicated to the Saint, to the majestic Basilica of Padova, the heart of Antonian devotion.

The new cycling route, also bi-directional, largely follows the stages of the walking pilgrimage, structured in 5 stages:

  • Gemona del Friuli – Meduno
  • Meduno – Polcenigo
  • Polcenigo – Susegana
  • Susegana – Asolo
  • Asolo – Padova

Designed for trained cyclists with muscle-powered bikes, the cycling route is also perfectly navigable with e-bikes, allowing travelers to enjoy the journey through changing and fascinating landscapes, ancient villages, rare natural beauty spots, and places that tell the story and spirituality of the North-East.

The route is also connected to some of the main European cycling routes: it branches off from the Alpe Adria cycling route, partially follows the FVG-3 Piedmont cycling route, follows the Munich-Venice cycling route, and connects, near Camposampiero, to the Ostiglia-Treviso route, providing a convenient link to the Po cycling route (VenTo).

Along with the Cycling Route, 11 cycling loop itineraries have also been inaugurated to explore the lands traversed by the Pilgrimage and the new Cycling Route. It’s an invitation to cycle and discover the most authentic soul of the region, with countryside churches, hidden paths, ancient traditions, and testimonies of faith.

The cycling loops will allow exploration by bike of the areas surrounding Gemona, Majano, Maniago, Aviano, Sacile, Vittorio Veneto, Conegliano, Vidor, Asolo, and Camposampiero.
