Anthony of Padua, Thomas Gallus...
Organized by the Centro Studi Antoniani, the seminar is the third in a series of in-depth meetings focusing on the historical figure of Saint Anthony, in preparation for the 2031 Centenary. The seminar will explore the relationship between Brother Anthony and Thomas of St. Victor (Thomas Gallus). A canon and abbot of the monastery of Sant’Andrea in Vercelli, and a commentator on the texts of Dionysian apophatic theology, Thomas knew the Franciscan friar personally and left a first-hand account of Anthony’s mystical dimension. The seminar will also seek to explore the roots of the intellectual formation that Fernando of Lisbon, later known as Anthony of Padua, received at the monastery of the Augustinian Canons of Santa Cruz in Coimbra, in fruitful connection with the schools of Paris, which revolutionized theology between the 12th and 13th centuries.
The influence of Victorine authors on the Sermones dominicales et festivi will also be examined, both in the sermons themselves and in the working materials preserved in Codex 720 of the Pontifical Antonian Library at the Basilica of Saint Anthony.
